Ville portuaire a la population depuis toujours cosmopolite, assumant son role de seconde capitale de l’Egypte tout en cultivant sa particularite d’etre ad Aegyptum, Alexandrie reunissait tous les parametres favorables a l’eclosion d’une presse diversifiee tant en arabe que dans toutes les autres langues parlees au gre des differents quartiers de la ville. Lingua franca de la diplomatie, des milieux d’affaires, des lettres, des cercles culturels et mondains, le francais prit le pas sur les autres langues et notamment sur l’italien, a partir de 1880. Regroupant des publications de natures diverses et variees, la presse francophone couvrira ainsi peu a peu tous les champs d’informations qu’elles soient supranationales, intercommunautaires, nationalistes ou intracommunautaires. Trois grandes periodes se degagent: l’eclosion dans les annees 1850-1900; l’age d’or de la premiere moitie du XXe siecle et l’e/ancrage dans une tradition des annees 1945-1960.
