English summary: This classic of Latin literary studies offers a vast and original summary of lost literature, focusing in tome 1 on works from the Republican period, then, in tome 2, on works up to the fifth century BCE (excluding Christian literature). Only brief fragments and traces remain of these adulated authors, poets, and tragedians without whom Horace or Virgil would not have been able to write their works. Henry Bardon show how little is left of the abundant Latin literature, sheds light on the cause of its decadence, and the reasons why so many works have disappeared.
