The transformation of the Crusades, in the second half of the Fourteenth century, is linked to growing difficulties as a consequence of the loss of the Holy Land to the Muslims in 1291. The legacy of the Crusades was taken up in the Mediterranean by Genoese and Venetians merchants, who frequented the seas of the Levant and knew of the regional complexities. These merchants were the protagonists of their own pragmatic way of crusading.
