La chiesa di San Rocco e l’unica chiesa veneziana a essere al tempo stesso luogo di culto per una confraternita – la Scuola Grande intitolata al santo – e “santuario”, grazie alla presenza del corpo del patrono, giunto a Venezia nel 1485 e conservato nel sontuoso altar maggiore dal 1520. Questi due elementi, che la caratterizzano fin dalle origini, ne hanno determinato le vicende, in un processo di grande complessita, la cui comprensione non si esaurisce nell’analisi delle strutture architettoniche e delle pur pregevoli opere d’arte dell’edificio sacro, ma richiede un approccio multidisciplinare, il concorrere di piu voci, per cercare di metterne in luce i diversi aspetti, non solo devozionali e liturgici, ma anche politici e sociali. Lo studio che qui si presenta, il primo monografico sulla chiesa, vuole dunque essere un primo passo nella comprensione degli eventi e dei fenomeni compositi che per secoli hanno interagito nella vita della Scuola Grande di San Rocco – la piu grande protagonista della capillare diffusione del culto del suo patrono in tutto il mondo – e della sua chiesa.
