Review - French De l'antiquite a la Renaissance, la notion de certitude est au coeur de la structuration de la pensee. Cet ouvrage etudie comment son statut ne cesse d'osciller entre celui de socle et celui d'aboutissement de toute reflexion. Une section aborde en premier lieu la certitude dans la pensee hellenistique. L'analyse artistique des fresques pompeiennes replace ensuite lacertitudoau centre de la culture visuelle romaine, tandis que l'etude du lexique de la certitude dans la zoologie latine en determinent les liens avec la mise en place d'une methode scientifique. La labilite de la certitude, a l'inverse, et le concept d'incertitude, par lequel il est parfois necessaire de passer pour atteindre un fondement solide du savoir, sont egalement explores.
