Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), philosophe et theologien danois, est considere comme le pere de l’existentialisme. Dans ce livre, qui ne se veut qu’introduction a son oeuvre, on rappelle en premier lieu le contexte historique, social et philosophique, dans lequel sa pensee s’est formee. On propose ensuite un itineraire philosophique a travers les stades de l’existence et un parcours thematique ou sont abordes les concepts fondamentaux de Kierkegaard: l’angoisse, l’ironie, la liberte, la responsabilite, le choix, l’authenticite, le desespoir, la finitude, l’Histoire, la communication indirecte. On insiste sur l’apport de Kierkegaard au debat philosophique en explicitant son appel au “devenir chretien”, projet existentiel qui donne sens a sa critique de Hegel: le Sujet est singulier, indetermine, libre il n’est pas piece ou moment d’un Systeme, il produit son horizon, il a a etre. On esquisse, enfin, les prolongements contemporains de cette oeuvre unique, a mi-chemin entre la litterature et la philosophie, entre la logique et l’intuition mystique, qui a eu tant d’influence sur Gabriel Marcel, Jean-Paul Sartre, Karl Barth, Martin Heidegger, Leon Chestov, Emmanuel Levinas, et Vladimir Jankelevitch, notamment.
