In the history of literature, Karl Gutzkow (1811-1878) is considered one of the most prolific authors of the 19th century. As a successful professional writer, he is known today not only for his extensive body of work, but also as a representative of a new specific type of author who had to continually respond to the latest developments in literary life and the book trade, and who extended a writer’s field of work by using contemporary media and newly developed genres and by practicing new types of writing. These interdisciplinary conference proceedings examine Gutzkow from a literary, social and media-historical perspective as the prototype of an author subject to the conditions of a dynamic, ever more diverse bourgeois society and present him in his various roles as a writer, journalist, theorist and provider of knowledge. German text.
