Avec ses qualites certaines et ses defauts voyants, l’oeuvre poetique de John Skelton, laureat couronne par l’Universite d’Oxford, homme d’eglise et precepteur d’Henri VIII, marque un important relai entre Chaucer et Spencer, entre l’esprit medieval et l’esprit de la Renaissance. Elle sert de trait d’union a deux generations, celle de Caxton, sous le dernier des Plantagenets, qui rapportera l’imprimerie des Flandres en Angleterre, et celle de Surrey, contemporain de la Reforme, qui rapporta le sonnet d’Italie. Entre les deux, Skelton fait figure de poete fougueusement national.
