George Borrow etait un magnifique athlete et un grand nerveux, ami des Romanichels et des vagabonds, assoiffe d’aventures. Il fut agent de la Societe Biblique de Londres, puis ecrivain. Il eut une heure de gloire, apres la parution de La Bible en Espagne, en 1843 ; puis on l’oublia. Quand il mourut, certains s’etonnerent qu’il eut vecu si longtemps. Presque seuls, les Gypsies se souvenaient de lui, et sa tombe n’avait pas d’autres visiteurs. Peu a peu, la faveur du public est revenue a lui. Il est desormais un grand inspirateur dans le monde anglo-saxon.
