La litterature anglaise etant riche de grands noms, pourquoi se pencher sur Frederick Marryat ou Captain Marryat – puisque telle est l’appellation la plus communement admise – qui semblerait faire plutot figure de parent pauvre ? Peut-etre bien pour cette raison meme, car, a lire ses ouvrages nombreux et varies, le lecteur ne peut s’empecher de remarquer que la critique mutile l’oeuvre de Marryat en ne voulant voir en lui que le Captain ; en effet, Conrad qui tenait absolument a se definir lui-meme comme un etre amphibie a clairement signale que les heros de Marryat participent de cette meme nature ambivalente et que, dans ses oeuvres romanesques, l’intrigue se deroule autant sur terre que sur mer.
