The exceptional cellist, composer, ethnologist and musical publicist Joachim Stutschewsky (1891-1982) is one of the many Jewish musicians who influenced musical life in the 20th century not only set against the background of their European connections, but also (after emigrating to the new State of Israel) by means of their affiliations to the musical culture of the Middle East. This collection of sources from the Stutschewsky estate presents for the first time a selection of his texts in their original German along with parts of his correspondence, including the biographical narrative “Der Wilnaer Balebessel (the Vilna Balebessel , the legendary synagogue prayer leader Joel-David Lewenstein Straschunsky). German description: Der herausragende Cellist, Komponist, Ethnologe und Musikpublizist Joachim Stutschewsky (1891-1982) ist einer der zahlreichen judischen Musiker, die das Musikleben des 20. Jahrhunderts nicht nur in ihren gesamteuropaischen Bezugen, sondern nach ihrer Auswanderung in den neu gegrundeten Staat Israel auch in seinen Bezugen zur musikalischen Kultur des Nahen Ostens verkorpern. Die Quellenedition aus Stutschewskys Nachlass prasentiert erstmals eine Auswahl seiner Texte in ihrer deutschen Originalfassung sowie Teile seines Briefwechsels. Der Briefwechsel Stutschewskys mit Rudolf Kolisch und seine Erinnerungen uber das “Wiener Streichquartett” geben wichtige Einblicke in die Geschichte dieses bedeutenden Ensembles und vor allem uber einige Personlichkeiten der Neuen Wiener Schule; der Briefwechsel mit Pablo Casals dokumentiert die jahrzehntelange freundschaftliche Beziehung der beiden Musiker; Stutschewskys Essays dokumentieren seine Beschaftigung mit der judischen Musikkultur. In der biographischen Erzahlung Der Wilnaer Balebessel thematisiert Stutschewsky zudem tragische Schicksal des legendaren judischen Chasan (Synagogenvorbeter) Joel-David Lewenstein Straschunsky (1816-1850) aus Wilna, genannt “Wilnaer Balebessel, und seinen misslungenen Versuch, einen Platz im Musikleben ausserhalb der Ghettomauern zu finden.
