Few things seem as undisputed in medical ethics (and also in medical law) as the principle of informed consent. However, how the doctrine of informed consent should be ethically justified in detail and spelled out in practice is controversial. The contributions in this book discuss the thesis that an adequate understanding of the principle of consent can only succeed if the following question is plausibly answered: Why is autonomy valuable?
