Roma e stata per secoli ed e, ancora oggi, un mito: immaginazione, sogno, speranza di redenzione, alienazione, quanto ognuno vuole trovare nella propria dimensione personale e nella citta. Caduta la grandezza della storia, diviene una leggenda: meta di viaggiatori, luogo d’arrivo o di transito per pellegrini. Oggetto di conquista. Ma e assunta anche a simbolo di sovranita, a matrice dell’ideologia del potere, ecclesiastico e temporale. Il mito di Roma ha coinvolto la fantasia letteraria di scrittori e poeti; ha ispirato pittori e miniatori. Scrivere di Roma nel libro medievale serve allora a capire il ruolo che tale immagine ha avuto all’interno di uno dei principali strumenti di diffusione della cultura e del sapere nel medioevo. E insieme a proporre le coordinate – tipologie formali, iconografiche, testuali – entro le quali leggere le raffigurazioni della citta per metterle in rapporto con l’ideologia, anzi con le molteplici ideologie di Roma.
