“Im Weihnachtswald” (In the Christmas Forest) is the title of one of the stories included in this volume by the late Eastern Swiss theologian and journalist Joseph Osterwalder. Yet the Christmas forest, a symbolic place where the animals begin to talk and where nature and humankind are reconciled, is not only found in this one story. It also materializes where estranged parents are reunited with their child or where someone who has lost hope gains courage again. Although the stories collected in this book are very diverse, they all describe the experience of Christmas moments, moments of salvation in the midst of a world without salvation. The authors of these stories are pastors, ministers and others working in the church in the cantons of St. Gallen, Thurgau and Appenzell. While a number of them publish a Christmas story for their community or for the local newspaper each year, others wrote their contribution for a special occasion or specifically for this book. Publishing the stories is meant to help pass on the wealth of ideas and spirituality often hidden away in many a drawer.
