Al tramonto dell’impero in Occidente, un’Italia ancora aggrappata al mito di Roma, nostalgica dei fasti e degli antichi esempi, accoglie i nuovi dominatori germanici. In un impasto di culture, nell’incontro-scontro di distinti valori, due popoli, i Romani e i Goti, sembrano avere raggiunto la capacita di convivere attraverso l’esercizio di funzioni complementari: i primi si giovano della tranquilla ciuilitas, la guerra spetta ai secondi. E allora che la cerchia anicia di Simmaco, di Boezio, di Cassiodoro, assurge a paladina dell’ideologia senatoria, in un estremo tentativo di difesa dell’ormai millenaria cultura classica, sola garanzia di salvezza per la romanitas. La monarchia gotica assume, dunque, una patina di ‘romanita’, dalla quale i sovrani traggono profitto per distinguersi dagli altri reges gentium e per accreditarsi quali degni eredi dei Cesari. Tale ‘rinascita’, che coinvolge presto la corte di Ravenna, vede il sua climax nella figura del principe filosofo. Essa e destinata tuttavia a una breve durata. Infatti, di fronte alla incombente minaccia della ‘riconquista’ bizantina, il mondo gotico non esitera a rivelare il suo vero volto.
