Chanoine a Oignies, archeveque de Saint-Jean d’Acre (1213-1228), puis cardinal de curie a Rome, jusqu’a sa mort (1240), Jacques de Vitry fut un predicateur celebre, et un auteur fecond. On redecouvre aujourd’hui l’interet historique et pastoral de sa Vita de Marie de Oignies, de l’Historia orientalis et de l’Historia occidentalis, ouvrages qui viennent de beneficier de nouvelles editions et de traductions. Temoins de son intense activite oratoire en France, dans le pays de Liege, en Orient, plus de 400 sermons ont ete transcrits avec soin. Jacques de Vitry les avait lui-meme repartis en quatre collections: de tempore (193 sermons), de sanctis (105), ad status uel uulgares (75), feriales uel communes (26). Mis a part le recueil de tempore edite en 1575, les autres series n’ont fait l’objet que de rares publications partielles. La presente edition porte sur la moitie environ du recueil ad status, soit 36 sermons s’adressant essentiellement a un public clerical ou religieux: prelats, pretres, moines et moniales, chanoines, etudiants, juges et avocats, theologiens, predicateurs, freres mineurs. Dix manuscrits ont ete retenus. On a porte grande attention a l’identification des sources multiples dont s’inspire chaque sermon, qu’elles soient bibliques, classiques, patristiques et medievales. Une culture litteraire et theologique exceptionnelle, un don d’observation nourri de diverses et souvent hautes responsabilites de l’auteur, une synthese reussie de la prise de parole et de sa transcription ecrite font du recueil ad status un temoin exceptionnel de la predication au premier tiers du XIIIe siecle.
