There are 364 characters that Dante meets in various ways during his journey. Most are in Hell, the most talkative meet in Purgatory. Delmay classifies the characters according to their way of behaving and the context from which they come, highlighting the construction of Dante’s narrative which in the categorization of the characters, in fact, demonstrates its power to represent the human comedy transferred to the Underworld. Mythological, historical and real characters, devils and angels, personifications, all contribute to the representation of humanity and its emotions. After many years, this remains the only complete census of the characters of the Divine Comedy.
