Tracing the many histories of comparative literature across Central Europe

The edited volume offers a series of historical overviews of the discipline in the region. The first section is devoted to theoretical discussion, addressing disciplinary historiography (Blaž Zabel), the discipline’s emergence from the region’s historical tensions (Blaž Gselman), and recent conceptualizations of Central Europe (Jessie Labov). Together, these contributions clarify key methodological issues while also making explicit the historical position from which we ourselves conduct our research. The second section presents histories of the discipline in Hungary (Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek), Romania (Snejana Ung), Czechia (Miloš Zelenka), Slovakia (Róbert Gáfrik), Poland (Małgorzata Burzka-Janik; Paweł Marcinkiewicz), Slovenia (Tone Smolej), Serbia (Vladimir Gvozden), Germany (Max Behmer), Austria (Norbert Bachleitner), and Switzerland (Marie Kondrat).
