Für Martin Luther orientiert sich die Theologie als Wissenschaft vom Ganzen neu an der Schrift und damit, prinzipiell anders als im Neuprotestantismus, am Alten Testament. Heiliger Geist und Rechtfertigung stehen daher in einem Entsprechungsverhältnis. Hegels Logik folgend, ist das mit Nikolaus von Kues beginnende Koinzidenzdenken der zu vereinigenden Gegensätze, der beiden Naturen Christi wie der von Gerechtigkeit und Sünde, von Heiligem Geist und Rechtfertigung, in die Theologie zurückgekehrt. Durch den Pantokrator ist Christologie zugleich Pneumatologie. Eine Wort-Gottes-Theologie ist damit Sakramentstheologie, besonders trinitanische Tauftheologie. Die ökumenische Frage stellt sich damit neu wie auch die nach dem Verhältnis von Theologie und Philosophie.
