The Middle Ages brought Europe the use of paper, a variety of fonts, most of today’s common punctuation marks, formative innovations in text design and a new quality of illustration and text illustration – laying the foundation for today’s media culture. Das Mittelalter brachte Europa die Verwendung des Papiers, eine Vielfalt an Schriftarten, die meisten der heute gebrauchlichen Satzzeichen, pragende Innovationen der Textgestaltung und eine neue Qualitat der Bebilderung und Textillustration – und legte damit das Fundament fur die Medienkultur der Gegenwart. Im Mittelalter bluhten Bibliothek und Archiv, deren reiche Uberlieferung den Aufbruch im Zeichen der Schrift bis heute sichtbar macht. Die Geschichte Mittelalterlicher Schriftkultur ist Grundlage fur das Verstandnis der Gegenwart. Doch obwohl immer mehr mittelalterliche Handschriften uber das Internet zur Verfugung stehen, ist das Grundwissen um ihre Entstehungsgeschichte im Ruckgang begriffen. Das reich bebilderte Lehrbuch nahert sich dieser Geschichte mit den Augen der Zeitgenossen und vermittelt den Einstieg in Lese-, Transkriptions- und Analysetechniken.
