This study presents different aspects of the Minoan city of Gournia in Crete. It focuses in particular on the significance of the settlement: was this Late Bronze Age settlement a city and did it therefore function as an urban centre?
English summary: This study presents different aspects of the Minoan city of Gournia in Crete. It focuses in particular on the significance of the settlement: was this Late Bronze Age settlement a city and did it therefore function as an urban centre? After discussing how the concept of ‘city’ can best be defined, the various elements of the city of Gournia are analyzed in order to find an answer to this question. In addition, the layout of the city Gournia is compared with four other Late Bronze Age cities. Furthermore, based on an overview of Gournia’s potential area of influence, the settlement’s role as a regional centre is explained. Finally the study looks at possible earlier and later settlements in the area around Gournia in order to provide an understanding of how the entire area changed over time. This volume is aimed at readers and academics with an interest in Minoan culture and its urban architecture or those who are specifically working on the subject of Bronze Age settlements and the elements that constitute a city. An English abstract and a French Sommaire provide a brief overview of the contents of the book. Numerous illustrations and an A3 fold out map showing the layout of the city helps readers to orientate themselves. German description: In diesem Buch werden die verschiedenen Facetten der minoischen Stadtanlage von Gournia auf Kreta vorgestellt. Der Fokus liegt auf der Frage nach der Bedeutung der Siedlung: Hat es sich bei der spatbronzezeitlichen Siedlung um eine Stadt und somit um ein urbanes Zentrum gehandelt? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, werden nach einer allgemeinen Beschaftigung mit der Definition des Begriffs glq Stadt grq die verschiedenen Elemente der Stadtanlage von Gournia analysiert: Sowohl deren Anlage, Besiedlungsgeschichte, Ausdehnung und Einwohnerzahl als auch einzelne Bestandteile der Siedlung wie mogliche Befestigungen, Wohnhauser und besondere Bauten, darunter die Hafenanlage, das Ensemble von glq Palast grq und glq offentlichem Hof grq sowie das glq Stadtheiligtum grq, werden betrachtet. Daruber hinaus wird die Stadtanlage von Gournia mit vier weiteren spatbronzezeitlichen Stadten verglichen. Anhand eines Uberblicks uber das mogliche Einflussgebiet Gournias wird ausserdem die Zentrumsfunktion der Siedlung innerhalb ihrer Region erlautert. Es werden auch potentielle Vorlaufer- und Nachfolgesiedlungen im Umkreis von Gournia vorgestellt, um den zeitubergreifenden Wandel im gesamten Gebiet fassbar zu machen. Das Buch richtet sich an Leser und wissenschaftliche Fachkollegen, die ein Interesse an der minoischen Kultur und deren Stadtarchitektur haben oder sich speziell mit bronzezeitlichen agaischen Siedlungen und den Elementen einer Stadt beschaftigen. Ein englisches Abstract und ein franzosisches Sommaire geben einen kurzen Uberblick uber den Inhalt des Buches.
