Die Geschichte der Franken ist fur die europaische Geschichte von zentraler Bedeutung. Ein wichtiger Grund fur ihren Erfolg war ihr besonderes Verhaltnis zu den Romern in den ersten nachchristlichen Jahrhunderten. Trotzdem erhalt diese fruhe Phase am Rand des Imperium Romanum bis heute wenig Aufmerksamkeit. Oliver Schipp widmet sich daher der Geschichte der Menschen am niedergermanischen Limes beiderseits des Rheins vom 1. bis 5. Jh. n. Chr. Dabei zeichnet er die Entwicklung sozialer Gruppen, etwa der Sugambrer, Chamaven, Amsivarier und Brukterer, zum Sozialverband der Franken nach. Diesen Vorgang der Inklusion der Protofranken in die Mehrheitsgesellschaft der Galloromer sieht er als Basis fur den spateren Siegeszug der Merowinger und Karolinger.
