Franz Petry’s 1916 treatise on the social content of Marx’s theory of value is devoted with remarkable clarity to the systematic significance of Marx’s concept of value for the philosophical analysis of economic cooperation and the corresponding social relations. Through this central concept of value, the treatise makes Marx’s social theory as a whole and its conceptualization of economic relations of validity its subject. Petry’s argument is of particular interest insofar as it takes place before the canonization of Marx’s reception in the 1920s, which is why it is largely unaffected by the ideological interventions and political dependencies that increasingly characterized that period. Petry formulates his critical analysis neither from a decidedly liberal perspective nor from a Marxist standpoint, but rather, drawing on positions of Riehl and Rickert, is primarily shaped by the basic assumptions of the neo-Kantian philosophy of science.
