Vous semblez fort perplexe quant a ma doctrine selon laquelle chaque corps exprime tous les autres (…). Mais si vous en mesurez bien la puissance, vous verrez que je n’ai rien dit qui ne suive de cette doctrine. C’est ainsi que Leibniz, en 1703, presentait l’essentiel de sa philosophie en la reconduisant a la notion d’expression : comprendre comment les substances s’entr’expriment, c’est trouver la cle de la metaphysique, de l’esthetique, du langage. La notion de coordination Zuordnung a fait l’objet d’un usage analogue au tournant du XXe siecle : de Helmholtz a Wittgenstein en passant par Hertz ou Boltzmann, elle a ete utilisee comme une cle explicative pour des domaines aussi divers que les philosophies du langage, de la science ou de la perception. La presente etude s’attache a mettre en lumiere le modele conceptuel auquel repondent ces notions de l’expression et de la coordination et a en comprendre la puissance d’explication.
