Metaphern wirken in Denkmustern und Diskursen weit vor der Entstehung eines jeden Bildes und sind ein wichtiges Instrument bei der visuellen Umsetzung von Sachverhalten. Sie dienen der Uberzeugung ebenso wie der Anregung von Denkprozessen – kaum ein figuratives Bild mit dem Anspruch, Inhalte zu vermitteln, kommt ohne Metaphorik aus. Dieser wird an Beispielen des Motivs Frau mit Schlange im Verhaltnis zu Nachbarbegriffen wie Symbol, Metonymie und Allegorie konturiert. Zahlreiche fruhe Kleopatra-Bilder offenbaren bildspezifische Inszenierungen im Dienst der Affirmation von Geschlechternormen, oft im Ruckgriff auf kulturell persistente Metaphoriken.
