The study explores the narrative relation between adventure, masculinity, and crisis in German colonial literature. In the novels, the clash between adventurous transgression and the need for colonial (self-)control is used to evoke a sense of male vulnerability and helplessness. Thus, the authors of colonial texts partake in a conservative criticism of modernity in European culture and society.
