Vertreter aus elf verschiedenen Disziplinen entwickeln in diesem Band gemeinsam Grundzüge einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Gedächtnisforschung. Neben den theoretischen Dispositionen konzentrieren sich die Beiträge auf zentrale Aspekte der Gedächtnisforschung wie Wissensordnungen, Intermedialität, Zeit und Identität. Das Spektrum ihrer Themen reicht von der Historizität des Gedächtnisses bis zur Verwissenschaftlichung der Erinnerung, von der Marginalisierung des Gedächtnisses bis zum globalisierten Weltgedächtnis, von der Glosse in der Französischen Revolution bis zur muslimischen Selbstinszenierung in Endzeiterzählungen. Den Bruchlinien der Erinnerung, so das Fazit, kommt gegenwärtig mehr Aufmerksamkeit zu als den bisher in der Forschung favorisierten identitären Erinnerungskonstruktionen.
