Amatus stammte aus einer romischen Familie in Grenoble und lebte fast dreiaig Jahre als Monch in Saint-Maurice d’Agaune. Dann zog er sich als Eremit in den Fels eines nahen Berges zuruck. Kurz bevor 613 im burgundischen Teilreich ein Aufstand gegen den Merowingerkonig Chlothar II. ausbrach, wurde Amatus in das Columbankloster Luxeuil berufen. Von dort aus richtete Amatus mit Hilfe des Adligen Romaricus klosterliche Gemeinschaften fur Manner und vor allem fur junge Frauen am sudostlichen Rand der Vogesen ein. Amatus fuhrte die Laus perennis ein, den ununterbrochenen, “ewigen” Psalmengesang, wie er in Saint-Maurice d’Agaune gepflegt wurde. Die im ausgehenden 7. Jahrhundert im Kloster Remiremont entstandene Legende des Eremiten, Klostergrunders und ersten Abts Amatus zahlt zu einer Trilogie von drei Viten der ersten Abte des Doppelklosters. Das Buch bietet eine deutsche Ubersetzung der Vita des Amatus mit Anmerkungen und untersucht die kulturellen Pragungen und Gehalte der Vita sowie die archaologischen Befunde im Hinblick auf eine Rekonstruktion der historischen Vorgange.
