English summary: Lucian of Samosata (2nd century CE) was one of the most important Greek men of letters who lived during the height of the Pax Romana. With his sharp eye for the discrepancy between appearance and reality in all fields of public life, Lucian was, at the same time, an eminent representative of learned culture in the Roman Empire, which he both practiced and pondered in an independent fashion. He was a master of the sharp-tongued polemic as well as a subtle formulator and literary designer; he lit up his age with his “Declamations,” critical literary essays, fantastic stories, pamphlets, and above all, the comedic-philosophic dialogue, which he pioneered. Thus his texts remain, whose wit and subtlety are still current even today, and which have been creatively applied in various ways in European literature. This book presents the author and his work from various perspectives, indicating his place in the literature and culture of the Roman Empire and gives an overview of his reception from antiquity to today.
