The first comprehensive die corpus of Early Abbasid gold coinage, AH 132–169. Based on 1,716 coins, it identifies eight distinct die styles for the first time — an essential reference for libraries, universities, and specialist research collections.
The first comprehensive die corpus of Early Abbasid gold coinage and contemporaneous issues — an essential reference work in Islamic numismatics.
This volume documents 1,716 gold dinars of the early Abbasid Caliphate from AH 132 to AH 169 (750–785/786 AD). The study identifies 1,106 obverse dies and 1,175 reverse dies through large-scale die-link analysis. Eight main die styles and at least two stylistically transitional groups are distinguished for the first time, revealing a detailed picture of coin production across seven chronological phases. The reconstruction of die chains, style sequences, and die relationships refines chronological frameworks and contributes to a more precise understanding of production patterns within the early Abbasid monetary system.
The volume includes a complete die corpus arranged by date, identification and mapping of die links and die chains, the first systematic classification of Early Abbasid gold die styles, high-quality illustrations supporting die comparison, and an apparatus facilitating cross-reference and citation. Designed for numismatists, historians of early Islam, museum curators, and advanced collectors, this corpus establishes a foundational framework for chronological, quantitative, and comparative research in Abbasid numismatics.
