Volume 17 of the charters of the German kings and emperors contains 168 documents and letters by Manfred of Sicily, son of Frederick II., dating from the time of his regency until shortly before his death at Benevento. Of these, five letters from the collection of correspondence of Petrus de Vinea as well as the famous manifesto to the Romans of 1265 and the edict of foundation for Manfredonia of 1263 are of particular importance; the latter having been edited on the basis of a version that thus far had not been taken into consideration in previous research. In addition, the volume contains six forged certificates from the modern age and 131 edited Deperdita. German text.

German description: Manfred, ein Sohn Friedrichs II., herrschte nach dem Tod seines Vaters zunachst als Regent fur seinen Halbbruder Konrad IV., spater fur seinen Neffen Konradin im Konigreich Sizilien. 1258 liess er sich, gegen die Anspruche Konradins, in Palermo zum Konig des Regnum Siciliae kronen und versuchte fortan seinen Herrschaftsanspruch auch in Norditalien gemass der imperialen Idee Friedrichs II. durchzusetzen. Sein Vorhaben scheiterte jedoch am Widerstand der Papste und mehr noch an den zunehmenden Spannungen zwischen Guelfen und Ghibellinen in den norditalienischen Kommunen. Mit Karl von Anjou, dem Bruder des franzosischen Konigs Ludwig dem Heiligen, bekam Manfred einen von den Papsten unterstutzten Gegner im Kampf um den sizilischen Thron. In der entscheidenden Schlacht bei Benevent im Februar 1266 verlor der junge Staufer nicht nur seine Herrschaft, sondern auch sein Leben. Band 17 der Urkunden der deutschen Konige und Kaiser enthalt 168 Urkunden und Briefe Manfreds von Sizilien aus der Zeit seiner Herrschaft als Regent bis kurz vor seinem Tod bei Benevent. Von herausragender Bedeutung sind dabei insbesondere funf Schreiben aus den Briefsammlungen des Petrus de Vinea, das beruhmte Manifest an die Romer von 1265 sowie die “Grundungsurkunde” fur Manfredonia von 1263, welche unter Verwendung einer bisher in der Forschung noch nicht berucksichtigten Uberlieferung ediert wurde. Zusatzlich enthalt der Band sechs neuzeitliche Urkundenfalschungen sowie 131 erschlossene Deperdita.
