Der Architekt Herman Sorgel (1885-1952) erlangte durch sein Atlantropa-Projekt Beruhmtheit, mit dem er die Absenkung des Mittelmeerspiegels und die Schaffung eines neuen Superkontinents anstrebte. Uber Sorgels Hauptwerk, die Theorie der Baukunst, ist hingegen bisher wenig bekannt. Das auf drei Bande angelegte Werk blieb Fragment; nur der erste Band erschien 1918. Sorgel wollte eine Wissenschaft der Architektur etablieren, um die Kernaufgaben der Disziplin und die Inhalte der Architektenausbildung zu definieren. Rainer Schutzeichel hat das Werk erstmals quellenkritisch analysiert – gestutzt auf zahlreiche unveroffentlichte Materialien. Er liefert einen umfassenden Uberblick zu Sorgels Theorie und arbeitet dessen bisher kaum beachtete Architektur- und Stadtebauentwurfe auf.
