Im Jahr 1120/21 grundete Norbert von Xanten mit Premontre die erste Gemeinschaft der Pramonstratenser. Er legte damit den Grundstein fur eine Erfolgsgeschichte, welche die Pramonstratenser zu einem der wichtigsten und groaten romisch-katholischen Orden regulierter Chorherren werden liea. Ulrich Leinsle beschreibt eingangig den mythischen Ursprung, die Ausbildung der Ordensstruktur sowie die Glanzzeiten des Ordens im Mittelalter. Fur den Orden folgten harte Zeiten, die im Zeichen von Reformation, Gegenreformation und Aufklarung standen. Von dort spannt sich der Bogen bis in die (sakularisierte) Gegenwart. Die Darstellung geht uber die rein kirchengeschichtliche Perspektive hinaus, indem sie kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Leistungen des Ordens in unterschiedlichen Bereichen, wie Architektur, Kunst und Wissenschaft, herausstellt.
