Towards the end of the Holy Roman Empire, the city of Trier was home to numerous monasteries and other religious institutions. Not all of them survived its fall. After the closure of these institutions in 1802, most of the inventory from their various libraries was assigned to the then existing public library, which operated as the city library after 1804. Now, as a result of a re-cataloging project, this new catalog includes 2,600 titles in the form of 3,060 volumes. All of the items originate from institutions in Trier or were donated to the public library and not a single item was additionally purchased. For this reason, great emphasis has been placed on the determination of their provenance, which could in most cases be ascertained, therefore providing, along with the surviving titles themselves, important building blocks for a history of libraries and intellectual life in Trier.
