Jahrhundert in die Westhalfte des Romischen Reiches, der Grundung des westgotischen Reiches in Sudfrankreich und des ostgotischen unter Konig Theoderich in Italien bis zum Untergang dieser Reiche 711 bzw. 552. Dabei werden nicht nur die ereignisgeschichtlichen Zusammenhange dargestellt, sondern auch die Assimilations- und Entwicklungsprozesse, die durch das Zusammenleben von Goten und Romanen entstanden, beleuchtet. Dabei offnet sich der Weg aus der Spatantike ins Mittelalter.
