Der Rang spielte fur die Einordnung des Einzelnen in die spatmittelalterliche Gesellschaft eine ganz entscheidende Rolle. In einem kommunikativen Prozess entwickelt, musste der Rang zeichenhaft dargestellt werden. Aber konnte er auch im Wappen abgebildet werden? Dieser Frage wird im ersten Teil dieses Buches nachgegangen. Im zweiten Teil werden die Wappensammlungen Englands und des Heiligen Romischen Reichs thematisiert. Nach welchen Prinzipien wurden die darin enthaltenen Wappen angeordnet und wie wurde der Rang eines Individuums oder einer Familie dargestellt?
