The Byzantine lead seals collection at the Numismatic Museum of Athens is renowned and has been published in the past. However, advancements in the scientific processing and interpretation of seals as historical sources have made a new edition necessary, specifically focusing on seals with family names.

Die byzantinischen Bleisiegel des Numismatischen Museums Athen gehoren zu den weltweit bedeutenden Sammlungen. Der Siegelbestand wurde erstmals zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts publiziert. Seit dieser Zeit lasst sich jedoch ein betrachtlicher Fortschritt in der wissenschaftlichen Bearbeitung und Interpretation von Siegeln als historischer Quelle feststellen. Gerade dieser Umstand macht eine Neuedition der historisch aussagekraftigsten Gruppe von Siegeln erforderlich: Siegel, die einen Familiennamen aufweisen. Fur die hier behandelten ca. 300 Stucke werden anhand von edierten und unedierten Parallelexemplaren anderer Sammlungen (in den USA, in Russland, Frankreich, Griechenland, Bulgarien und Osterreich) oft neue Lesungen und Datierungen geboten. In Verbindung mit anderen Fachdisziplinen bzw. Quellengruppen eroffnet sich somit die Moglichkeit, Biographien und Familiengeschichten detaillierter zu rekonstruieren, als dies bislang moglich war. Ausserdem werden die ikonographischen Darstellungen auf den Siegeln nicht nur durch Abbildungen wiedergegeben, sondern genau beschrieben und den jeweiligen Bildschemata zugeordnet.
