Die antike Landschaft Triphylien liegt an der Westkuste der Peloponnes. Sie wird von den Flussen Alpheios im Norden und Neda im Suden begrenzt. Im Osten schliesst die Landschaft Arkadien an. In dem etwa 600 Quadratkilometer grossen Gebiet gibt es zahlreiche Siedlungen und ausserstadtische Heiligtumer, die in der antiken Literatur haufig erwahnt sind. Die zahlreichen Poleis schlossen sich ab 400 v. Chr. zu einem Stadtebund zusammen, um sich gegen den ubermachtigen expandierenden Nachbarn Elis im Norden abzugrenzen. Ziel eines mehrjahrigen Forschungsprojektes war es, alle vorhandenen Quellen – von den architektonischen Resten der Stadte im Gelande uber die archaologischen Funde bis hin zu den Erwahnungen in der antiken Literatur – zusammenzutragen und in Deckung zu bringen.
