Hiltrud Westermann-Angerhausen provides an insight into the life and work of Egbert of Trier, one of the most important church princes of the Ottonian period, and presents the works of art that he commissioned: the Egbert Psalter, the Egbert Codex and the so-called Egbert Shrine with the impressive foot of Saint Andrew (Andreas-Tragaltar) as well as the Saint Peter’s Staff.

Egbert von Trier war vor dem Jahr 1000 der Idealtyp eines ottonischen Bischofs. Er war furstlicher Geburt, gross geworden am standig reisenden Kaiserhof und gut vernetzt mit den Entscheidungstragern seiner Zeit. Er war Kanzler, notfalls auch Krieger in unruhigen Zeiten und Erzbischof (977-993) des altesten Bistums in einem Gebiet, das einmal zum spateren Deutschland gehoren wurde. In Trier hat er sich – zwischen riesigen Bauten und Ruinen der Romerzeit – um zerstorte und verarmte Kirchen und Kloster gekummert sowie Bildung und Kunste befordert, um den Menschen, fur die er Verantwortung hatte, den Geist und die Augen zu weiden. Ein Seelenhirte eben, der sehr bewusst begabte Kunstler einsetzte, um den Blick aus einer Umwelt von Gefahrdung und Leid auf eine Welt von Erlosung und Frieden zu offnen. In den Kunstwerken, die er in Auftrag gab, lebt diese Botschaft weiter. Hiltrud Westermann-Angerhausen stellt Leben und Wirken Egberts von Trier in einer engen Verknupfung von historischer Forschung und Analyse bedeutender Kunstwerke vor: der Egbert-Psalter, der Egbert-Codex und der sogenannte Egbert-Schrein mit dem ausdrucksvollen goldenen Apostelfuss auf dem Andreas-Tragaltar, der im Trierer Dom aufbewahrt wird, sowie dem ebenfalls fur Trier bestimmten Petrus-Stab-Reliquiar, jetzt in Limburg.
