English summary: The “foundation” is a core concept in art history; it describes the material carrier, the primer, as well as the composition of foreground, middle- and background. In the 19th century, the understanding of foundation changed. Using the example of the French artists Corot and Courbet, the facets of the foundation and its significance for painting are examined.
