Bei den Chorproben des Engelchors fallt der kleine Zetnael durch Ubermut und Unordnung auf. Weil er den richtigen Heiligenschein nicht rechtzeitig findet, verpasst er den Abflug der Engel, die den Menschen verkunden sollen, dass der Sohn Gottes in einem Stall geboren worden ist. Zetnael entdeckt den liegengebliebenen Taktstock des Dirigenten Gabriel und will ihn sofort zu ihm bringen. Aber wo ist der Chor hin? Auf seiner Suche trifft Zetnael auf den alten, halbblinden Esel von Josef, den Stallknecht der drei Weisen und das lahme Hirtenmadchen Zippora. Alle drei durften nicht mit nach Betlehem. Zetnael bewegt sie dazu, mitzukommen. Schliesslich treffen die vier rechtzeitig im Stall ein und es wird klar: Wenn der Himmel zur Erde kommt, gilt das allen.
