In der Johanniskirche in Mainz offnete ein Expertenteam am 4. Juni 2019 einen Sarkophag und fand die sterblichen Uberreste eines Erzbischofs. Die archaologischen, textil- und naturwissenschaftlichen sowie die historischen Indizien zeigen, dass es sich beim Toten um Erkanbald (1011-1021 reg.) handelt.
Die evangelische Johanniskirche liegt mitten in der Stadt Mainz. Die heutige Gemeindekirche war die ursprungliche Kathedrale der Stadt und dem hl. Martin geweiht. 1036 verlor sie ihre Funktion anlasslich der Weihe des benachbarten heutigen Doms. Seit 2013 sind in der Johanniskirche Ausgrabungen im Gang. Sie forderten auf der Mittelachse direkt vor dem Ostchor an prominentem Platz einen Sarkophag zutage. Der im wiederverwendeten steinernen Sarkophag bestattete Erkanbald war der erste Mainzer Erzbischof, der sich in der Bischofskirche bestatten liess und der einzige, der in der ursprunglichen Kathedrale seine letzte Ruhestatte fand. Die Kirche und die Lage seiner Bestattung darin werden ebenso vorgestellt wie seine liturgische Gewandung. Ausfuhrungen zu den historischen Fakten seiner Person runden die vorlaufige Darstellung dieser ausserordentlichen Befunde ab.
