Das beruhmte lateinische Satorquadrat aus dem 1. Jh. n. Chr. hat Vorganger: magische Quadrate aus dem Eschmunheiligtum von Sidon, die gut vierhundert Jahre alter sein durften. Sie bauen auf den Namen der Gottheiten Astarte, Eschmun und Schamasch auf. Die Inschriften, welche bei zeitlich weit auseinanderliegenden Grabungen gefunden worden sind und erst seit 2005 vollstandig publiziert vorliegen, zeugen von einem spielerisch-gelehrten Umgang mit der Gotterwelt, enthalten moglicherweise sogar eine bildliche Vorform der stoischen Gotteslehre. Von ihrer ausseren Gestalt her erinnern sie an griechische Inschriften des sogenannten Stoichedon style. Auch agyptische Einflusse sind nicht auszuschliessen. Diese Inschriften aus einem kulturellen melting pot des Nahen Ostens gehoren zu den wichtigsten Quellen der an Originaldokumenten armen phonizischen Religionsgeschichte.
