The altarpiece in the town church of St Reinoldi in Dortmund is one of the most important works of art to have survived from the beginning of the 15th century in northern Europe. The book presents the results of the restoration of the retable as well as new research on this impressive example of Netherlandish carving and painting.

Das Altarwerk in der Stadtkirche St. Reinoldi wurde um 1415 aus der seinerzeit bedeutenden Kunstmetropole Brugge im Kontext des Luxusguter-Transfers der Hanse importiert. Es schmuckt seither die stadtische Hauptkirche in Dortmund. Das Retabel zahlt zu den bedeutendsten Kunstwerken, die vom Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts im nordlichen Europa uberliefert sind: Die ausserordentliche Qualitat der Figuren im Schrein mit ihrer virtuosen Formgebung bezeugen das hohe Konnen und Anspruchsniveau der niederlandischen Schnitzkunst dieser Zeit. Die Flugelgemalde stellen den umfangreichsten erhaltenen Zyklus niederlandischer Malerei vom Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts dar. Im Sommer 2024 wurde das Altarwerk restauriert und wissenschaftlich untersucht. Im Anschluss fuhrte das Bildarchiv Foto Marburg eine umfangreiche Fotokampagne durch. Das ist Anlass fur eine interdisziplinare Publikation, um diese Ergebnisse sowie neue Forschungen vorzustellen und Fotografien des aktuellen Zustands zu publizieren. Thematisiert werden diese verschiedenen Aspekte sowie die Biografie des Objekts nach Einfuhrung der Reformation. Dabei kommen Restaurator:innen, Kunsthistoriker: innen und Historiker:innen zu Wort. Zudem wird reflektiert, wie Zugange zu dem reichen Erbe christlicher Kunst in der diversen Gesellschaft des 21. Jahrhunderts eroffnet werden konnen.
