In achttien kleine notaboekjes beschrijft drukker Richard Dieudonne dag op dag hoe de Eerste Wereldoorlog is verlopen, met name in Asse en in West-Brabant en Belgie. De auteur steunt hiervoor op eigen ervaring, op feiten die hij verneemt van familieleden, vrienden, getuigen, of die hij heeft gelezen in binnen- of buitenlandse dag- of weekbladen. Randnotities tonen aan dat hij de feiten op hun waarheid heeft gecontroleerd. Naast zijn historische waarde biedt dit oorlogsdagboek ook een interessante brok mentaliteitsgeschiedenis, geeft het een beeld van de sociaal-economische situatie van het platteland, van de prijzenevolutie van de verbruiksgoederen in oorlogstijd, van de berichtgeving in de pers en zelfs van de meteorologische toestand in de jaren 1914-1918. Dieudonne, aanvankelijk vurig royalist en zelfs patriot, wordt naarmate de oorlog verder woedt als activist een verdediger van de Flamenpolitik van de Duitse bezetter, wat hem na de oorlog twee jaar cel zal kosten in de “Bastille” in Leuven.
