Als Haretiker verdachtigt, doch als Bibelexeget geschatzt: Mit diesem Profil ist Claudius von Turin (ca. 780-827/28) bekannt. In der Tat ist sein Eifer als Bischof gegen den Bilder- und Reliquienkult von zeitgenossischen Theologen wie Jonas von Orleans und Dungal scharf kritisiert worden. Seine zahlreichen Kommentare zum Alten und Neuen Testament wurden aber bereits zu seiner Zeit geschatzt, dann haufig wiederverwendet und ggf. pseudepigraphisch uberliefert. Im Laufe der Zeit sind sie fast in Vergessenheit geraten, verloren gegangen oder lange unveroffentlicht geblieben. Dies gilt auch fur die Kommentare zum Epheser- bzw. zum Philipperbrief, die Claudius kurz vor seiner Ubernahme des Bischofsamtes verfasst und dem Kaiser Ludwig dem Frommen gewidmet hat; bei ihm hatte er zuvor als Hofkaplan gewirkt. Diese Kommentare bestehen ebenso wie die anderen des Claudius aus Exzerpten verschiedener patristischer Quellen, darunter auch wenig bekannte Pauluskommentare. Augustins Schriften, besonders die zur Gnadenlehre, spielen eine zentrale Rolle. Gerade an der Auswahl von patristischen Stellen lasst sich Claudius Bibel- und Theologieverstandnis ablesen: Darin besteht das Interesse an diesen kompilatorischen Werken, die hier zum erstmal im Druck erscheinen.
