Il s’agit de la reimpression de l’ouvrage paru sous le meme titre en 1960 (Publications. de l’Universite de Lyon) et epuise depuis 1975. En depit de son age, l’ouvrage n’a rien perdu de sa qualite ni de son importance, car il n’existe toujours pas de volume sur le marche francais se proposant le meme but: donner aux apprentis epigraphistes (et a un public plus large) acces aux documents epigraphiques grecs, qui jouent un role si important en Histoire ancienne. Il s’agit d’un recueil de 53 inscriptions grecques, choisies pour representer les principaux types d’inscriptions grecques: decrets (issus des diverses institutions), nominations de juges, comptes-rendus de mandat (d’ambassadeur par exemple.), lettres officielles, contrats, lois imperiales, inventaires (de temple), actes d’affranchissement, dedicaces, quelques inscriptions funeraires et, enfin, une inscription bilingue du roi Asoka. Les textes sont donnes en grec in-extenso, les restitutions, lorsqu’il en est besoin, sont imprimees dans le texte tous les textes sont l’objet d’un commentaire, ou l’on presente le type de documents et ses conventions, puis une analyse du texte et enfin une traduction tres fidele de celui-ci. Les principaux points du texte sont repris dans un commentaire, ou est donnee la bibliographie de la question. L’ouvrage est complete de deux index: mots grecs (tres complet, l’accent etant mis sur les mots et expressions techniques), index francais (sujets et noms de fonction etc.). Dans la mise au point, G. Rougemont (Professeur Lyon) mettra a jour la bibliographie et relevera les travaux les plus recents dont les inscriptions comprises dans le volume ont ete l’objet. On compte reimprimer, dans les memes conditions, le Nouveau choix d’inscriptions grecques, publie une quinzaine d’annees plus tard par J. Pouilloux. Ainsi les apprentis epigraphistes auront entre les mains l’outil de travail qui leur faisait defaut depuis tres longtemps.
