Nel Terzo Libro (1540), Sebastiano Serlio scrive che Donato Bramante non “fece ne la piu bella, ne la piu artificiosa architettura di questa”, cioe una scala a lumaca. L'”inventione” – come la definisce Giorgio Vasari nelle Vite (1568) – emerge dal fianco orientale del palatium innocenziano-roveresco del Belvedere Vaticano e consiste di una scala a elica con quattro genera di colonne sovrapposte attorno a un ampio pozzo di luce centrale. L’ingegnosa “pulcherrimam acclivem cochlidem” e un brano noto della storia dell’architettura rinascimentale – in primis grazie ai contributi di James S. Ackerman, Arnaldo Bruschi e Christiane Denker Nesselrath – ma gli studi non hanno ancora esaurito la conoscenza del monumento. Cosi – in un mutato contesto storiografico – il presente volume riesamina le fonti e suggerisce interpretazioni alternative. Lo studio affronta le questioni chiave relative alla lumaca: cronologia, funzione e rapporti con architetture analoghe. Parallelamente, emerge la necessita di ragionare sull’evoluzione delle scale elicoidali e del Leitmotiv della coclide colonnata. Il tentativo e comprendere (piu) pienamente l'”inventione” o “capriccio” di Bramante, e il suo impatto sulla storia dell’architettura.
