Rom befindet sich auf dem Gipfel der Hochrenaissance, als am 6. Mai 1527 ein Heer des allerkatholischsten Kaisers Karl V. die Ewige Stadt sturmt und in der Folgezeit ein regelrechtes Terrorregiment am Tiber errichtet – sacco di roma. Papst Clemens VII. muss nach der Einnahme Roms monatelang in der Engelsburg als Gefangener in seiner eigenen Hauptstadt ausharren. Eine besondere Zuspitzung erfahrt das Geschehen dadurch, dass ein groaer Teil der kaiserlichen Soldner lutherisch gesinnte Landsknechte sind, die glauben, den Antichrist in Person zu bekampfen.
