Die Bedeutung der Bischofsstadt Freising wurde durch die Freisinger Furstbischofe nicht nur auf religiosem, sondern auch auf kulturellem Gebiet unter Beweis gestellt. So trug Cosmas Damian Asam, der in Rom lernte und von Rubens beeindruckt war, den Titel des Furstbischoflichen Freysingischen Hofmalers und auch sein Bruder, Egid Quirin Asam, wurde in Anerkennung seiner Verdienste um die Ausstattung des Freisinger Dom zum Hofstuckator ernannt.
